2009: A Book of Grace-Filled Days

(Chicago, IL: Loyola Press, 2008)

This page-a-day pocket book is cutely square and conveniently brief in its reflections on Scripture, saints, feasts, and how to live a spiritually-centered life every day. The Grace-Filled Days series has featured contemporary writers Vinita Hampton Wright and LaVonne Neff in recent years. This title beginning in Advent 2008 is written by Alice Camille.

Review

As the Diocesan Director of Catechetical Ministry, I receive an inordinate number of Lenten reflections and inspirational daily reading booklets. Alice Camille's daily inspiration book is by far the best I have ever read. Like many, it is Scripture based; unlike many, it leaves the reader with a precious jewel of wisdom which is relevant, timely, conversion oriented and relationally based. I hope Ms. Camille will be doing one for next Lent— I will be sure to order a copy for each of my parish catechetical leaders. Thank you so much Loyola.

Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" John 21:15

On my best days, I might have answered Jesus like Peter did, with fervent commitment. On other days, I fear I would have said this: "Yes, Lord, I love you. Quite a lot; but let's be reasonable. One has responsibilities. Things cost money. You can't expect miracles. You have to live in the real world. Nobody will take care of you if you don't take care of yourself." And then I would have hid from Jesus like Peter once did and wept bitterly.
